The Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival

The Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival (SMHAFF) is calling on all film-makers; established or aspiring, students or industry professionals, community or arts groups, as the submission dates for the innovative film competition are announced.

SUBMISSION DATES: Friday 30th May - 29th August 2008

The multi-arts festival is the largest of its kind, taking place in venues all over Scotland from 1st - 19th October 2008, and is becoming a major cultural event in Scotland. The film competition will provide artists with a platform to challenge, engage and explore issues around mental health. Winning films will be screened alongside features and documentaries, with post film discussions, at venues including the Filmhouse and Grosvenor as part of the festival's diverse and intriguing film season.

Last year over 50 independent films, including shorts starring Kate Dickie ( Red Road) and acclaimed author Irvine Welsh, were submitted and subject matter ranged from young people discussing their emotional dilemmas to an older artist with dementia reflecting on his life and family.

The festival aims to tackle stigma and promote recovery, by exploring the relationship between mental health and creativity, celebrating the artistic achievements of people with experience of mental health issues and promoting positive mental health and well being. The festival is looking for artists to submit existing work or encourage the production of new work exploring these issues to be submitted by the 29th August.

The Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival Film Competition is presented in association with Diversity Films and 4Talent Scotland.
